The Community Book Exchange

One Saturday morning, Sara was cleaning her room when she noticed a large box under her bed. She pulled it out and opened it. Inside, there were many books that she had read several years ago. Some were novels, some were travel books, and others were simple books about learning new skills.

فــي صباح يوم السبت، كانت سارة تنظف غرفتها عندمـــا لاحظت صندوقًا كبيرًا تحت سريرها. أخرجته وفتـــحته. فــي الداخل، كان تجد هناك العديد مـــن الكتب التــي قرأتها مـــنذ عدة سنوات. كان بعضها روايات، وبعضها كتبًا عن السفر، والبعض الآخر كتبًا بسيطة عن تتعلم مهارات حديثة.

Sara looked at the books and realized that she probably would not read most of them again. However, she did not want to throw them away. She thought that someone else might enjoy them or learn something useful from them.

نظرت سارة إلــى الكتب وأدركت أنها علــى الأرجح لن تقرأ معظمها مرة أخرى. لكنها لم ترغب فــي التخلص مـــنها. وفكرت أنه شخصًا آخر ربمـــا يستمتع بهـــا أو يتتعلم مـــنها شيئًا مفــيدًا.

While she was having breakfast, Sara had an idea. She remembered that there was a small empty space near the entrance of her neighborhood. She thought, “Why don’t we create a place where people can leave books and take other books for free?”

بينمـــا كانت تتناول الإفطار، خطرت اليةا فكرة. تذكرت أنه تجد هناك مساحة صغيرة فارغة بالقرب مـــن مدخل الحي. وفكرت: “لمـــاذا لا ننشئ مكانًا يستطيع الناس فــيــه ترك الكتب وأخذ كتب أخرى مجانًا؟”

She talked to a few neighbors about the idea. At first, they were not sure if it would work. Some people thought that nobody would bring books, while others worried that the books might be damaged or lost.

تحدثت مع بعض الجيران عن الفكرة. فــي الخطوة الأولى، لم يحدثوا متأكدين مـــن نجاحها. اعتقد بعض الناس أنه لا أحد سيحضر الكتب، بينمـــا كان آخرون قلقين مـــن أنه تتلف الكتب أو تضيع.

Sara decided to give it a try anyway. She cleaned the empty space and found an old wooden shelf in her storage room. Her brother helped her move it outside and fix it against the wall.

The next morning, Sara placed twenty books on the shelf. She also made a small sign that said, “Take a book, leave a book.” She hoped that people would understand the idea.

فــي صباح حيث اليوم القادم، وضعت سارة عشرين كتابًا علــى الرف. كمـــا صنعت لافتة صغيرة كُتب علــىها: “خذ كتابًا، واترك كتابًا.” وكانت تأمل أنه يفهم الناس الفكرة.

At first, nothing happened. People walked past the shelf without stopping. Sara started to think that the project had been a bad idea. She almost decided to take the shelf back home.

فــي الخطوة الأولى، لم يحصل شيء. كان الناس يمرون بجانب الرف بدون أنه يتوقفوا. بدأت سارة تعتقد أنه المشروع كان فكرة سيئة. وكادت أنه تقرر إالعودةة الرف إلــى المـــنزل.

Then, an elderly man stopped and looked at the books. He picked up a travel book and smiled. “I used to love traveling,” he said. “I haven’t read about different countries in years.”

ثـــم توقف رجل مسن ونظر إلــى الكتب. أخذ كتابًا عن السفر وابتسم. وقال: “كنت أرومـــانسية حب السفر كثيرًا. لم أقرأ عن الدول المختلفة مـــنذ سنوات.”

He took the travel book and returned the next day with three books from his own collection. Sara was surprised and happy. She realized that the project might actually work.

أخذ كتاب السفر والعودة فــي حيث اليوم القادم ومعه ثلاثة كتب مـــن مجموعته المعلنـــة. شعرت سارة بالدهشة والسالعودةة. وأدركت أنه المشروع ربمـــا ينجح بالفعل.

During the following week, more people started bringing books. A young student brought several English books. A mother brought children’s stories. Another neighbor brought books about cooking and gardening.

خــلال الأسبوع القادم، بدأ المزيد مـــن الناس فــي إحضار الكتب. أحضر الطلبة شاب عدة كتب باللغة الإنجليزية. وأحضرت إحدى الأمهات قصصًا للأطفال. وأحضر جار آخر كتبًا عن الطبخ والبستنة.

Soon, the small shelf became a popular place in the neighborhood. People stopped there on their way home from work or school. Some people took a book, while others stayed for a few minutes to talk about what they had read.

وسرعان مـــا أصبح الرف الصغير مكانًا مشهـــورًا فــي الحي. كان الناس يتوقفون عنده فــي الية عودتهم مـــن العمل أو فــي المدرسة. كان بعضهم يأخذ كتابًا، بينمـــا يبقى آخرون لبضع دقائق للتحدث عمـــا قرؤوه.

One afternoon, Sara noticed a little girl standing in front of the shelf. The girl was looking at a children’s story but seemed unsure about taking it.

فــي أحد الالأيام بعــد الظهر، لاحظت سارة طفلة صغيرة تقف أمـــام الرف. كانت الطفلة تنظر إلــى قصة للأطفال لكنها بدت مترددة فــي أخذها.

Sara smiled and said, “You can take it. That’s what the shelf is for.” The girl smiled back and took the book. Her mother thanked Sara and said that her daughter had recently started learning to read.

ابتسمت سارة وقالت: “يمكنك أخذها. هذا هـــو الغرض مـــن الرف.” ابتسمت الطفلة وأخذت الكتاب. وشكرت والدتها سارة وقالت إن ابنتها بدأت مؤخرًا فــي تتعلم القراءة.

A few weeks later, the neighbors decided to add another shelf. They also put a small chair next to it, so people could sit and read for a while.

بعــد بضعة أسابيع، قرر الجيران بالاضافة لذلك رف آخر. كمـــا وضعوا كرسيًا صغيرًا بجانبه حتى يستطيع الناس الجلوس والقراءة لبعض الظل.

Sara looked at the two shelves and remembered how worried she had been on the first day. She realized that the project had grown because people were willing to share something simple.

نظرت سارة إلــى الرفــين وتذكرت مدى قلقها فــي حيث اليوم الأول. وأدركت أنه المشروع نجح لأنه الناس كانوا مستعدين لمشاركة شيء بسيط.

She also learned an important lesson. Sometimes, a good idea does not need a lot of money or complicated plans. It only needs someone who is willing to take the first step.

By the end of the month, the book exchange had become part of the neighborhood. People were not only exchanging books; they were also exchanging ideas, recommendations, and stories.
