The last ten nights are an opportunity for change
One of the ways Allah shows His blessings to His servants is by providing them with seasons and inspirations that multiply rewards, forgive sins, and compensate for missed good deeds. The last ten nights of Ramadan are among these blessed seasons, during which the righteous predecessors competed to gain rewards and closeness to Allah. They spared no effort in seeking His pleasure.
As Muslims, we should eagerly observe Ramadan and use it wisely, striving to attain its virtues, remaining steadfast in obedience, increasing in good deeds, renewing our repentance, and avoiding distractions and worldly matters that divert our attention from Allah and worship.
Complying with these blessed seasons elevates our position before Allah, increases our good deeds, and helps us achieve happiness in this life and the Hereafter. Let us make the most of these blessed seasons by striving to get closer to Allah, earning His pleasure, and avoiding anything that distances us from Him or harms our worship and piety.
The virtue of praying at night in the last ten days of Ramadan
The last ten nights of Ramadan offer a unique opportunity for Muslims to engage in various worship acts, including Qiyam and Taraweeh prayers. The Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged his companions to perform these acts, as they bring forgiveness, purification of hearts, and elevate one’s status before Allah in both this world and the Hereafter.
Muslims should eagerly embrace this period and strive to perform Qiyam, Taraweeh, and other nighttime worship acts. It is a valuable opportunity to purify oneself and draw closer to Allah, and to receive great rewards, forgiveness, and repentance from sins and mistakes.
Reflecting on the significance of these worship acts in achieving the ultimate goal of human life, which is to worship Allah and draw closer to Him, can help us change for the better, improve our ethics, and develop ourselves. Therefore, let us seize this opportunity to enhance our spiritual journey and strengthen our relationship with Allah.
The virtue of night worship
Nighttime worship has several distinctive features and advantages, including:
1- Achieving sincerity: It is considered the most sincere form of worship as it is done away from the view of others, and thus there is no issue of showing off or seeking praise.
2- It requires greater effort than daytime worship: The worshipper needs to strive against themselves to perform the night prayer, and therefore its reward is greater than other forms of worship.
3- It enhances mental clarity: Due to being away from distractions and focusing on worship, the worshipper can better contemplate the verses of the Quran.
4- It coincides with the time of answered prayers: Allah descends to the lowest heaven in the last third of the night, and this is a precious opportunity to seek forgiveness and mercy.
5- It combines seeking forgiveness with purifying the heart from sins: It is an opportunity to draw closer to Allah through obedience, supplication, and seeking forgiveness, and in doing so, the worshipper’s rank is elevated before Allah.
Therefore, Muslims should be keen to perform nighttime worship during the last ten nights of Ramadan and take advantage of this precious opportunity to draw closer to Allah, contemplate His verses, and seek forgiveness and mercy. They should avoid distractions and worldly matters during these blessed nights.
The virtue of Ramadan and Laylat al-Qadr
Islam places great emphasis on achieving a number of significant rituals during the blessed month of Ramadan, one of which is the Night Prayer (Qiyam). The Prophet (peace be upon him) urged and encouraged performing Qiyam, and it is narrated that he said: “Whoever stands for the prayers during Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, all his previous sins are forgiven.” One of the forms of Qiyam is the Taraweeh prayer that is performed during Ramadan.
The reward for performing Qiyam is multiplied in the last ten nights of Ramadan, in the hope of attaining Laylatul Qadr and seeking immense reward and abundant blessings from Allah. It is important for Muslims to seek out Laylatul Qadr during the last ten nights of Ramadan, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Search for Laylatul Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan.” By doing so, the Muslim can attain the full reward for performing Qiyam during the last ten nights, including Laylatul Qadr.
Achieving these significant rituals in Ramadan demonstrates sincerity, piety, and obedience to the commands of Allah and His Messenger. Qiyam is an important form of worship that helps strengthen spirituality and connect with Allah, bringing tranquility and peace to the soul. Therefore, it is important for Muslims to strive to achieve these rituals and apply them in their daily lives.
The guidance of the Prophet in the last ten days of Ramadan
The Prophet (peace be upon him) is considered one of the most diligent in worship during the last ten nights of Ramadan, which he devoted himself to more than any other time. It is reported that Aisha, the mother of the believers, said that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to devote himself to worship during the last ten nights of Ramadan, by performing prayers, remembrance, supplication, and leaving aside worldly matters.
He would urge his family to stand for prayer and remind them of the importance of these last ten nights. He would also seclude himself for Allah, supplicating and pleading, and distancing himself from worldly matters. It is reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to seclude himself during the last ten nights of Ramadan until his death, and then his wives followed his example.
Performing these acts of worship and striving during the last ten nights of Ramadan is considered one of the most righteous deeds that help strengthen faith, achieve closeness to Allah, and elevate one’s ranks in Paradise. Therefore, Muslims should strive in worship during these blessed days and commit to prayer, remembrance, supplication, and leaving aside worldly matters, in order to achieve sincerity in worship and draw nearer to Allah.
There are several things that can help a person stand for prayer and devote themselves to worship during the last ten nights of Ramadan, including avoiding physically exhausting activities, taking a nap during the day to help with staying awake at night, fearing Allah and striving to please Him, focusing on the Hereafter and preparing for the meeting with Allah, and committing to obedience and staying away from sins.
Achieving these things will help Muslims prepare for worship during the last ten nights of Ramadan, achieve sincerity in worship, draw nearer to Allah, and elevate their ranks in Paradise. Muslims should commit to these things and work towards them in order to achieve happiness in this world and the Hereafter.
