Andre Braugher, the American actor known for his roles in TV shows Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Homicide: Life on the Street, has sadly passed away at the age of 61.

Jennifer Allen, his spokesperson, has verified that he passed away due to a brief period of sickness.

Braugher gained the most recognition for his portrayal of Captain Raymond Holt on the comedy show Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which concluded in 2024.

The actor’s co-star, Terry Crews, shared a tribute to him on Instagram.

“I can’t comprehend the fact that you left us so unexpectedly,” the message stated.

I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to meet you, laugh with you, collaborate with you, and experience 8 incredible years witnessing your unique and invaluable skills.

“This hurts.”

Marc Evan Jackson, who portrays the character of Dr. Kevin Cozner, Braugher’s spouse on the screen, also shared a brief tribute.

“O Captain. My Captain,” it said.

Joe Lo Truglio, known for his role as Charles Boyle, discussed his most cherished memories from his time on the show with Braugher.

He penned that the man had an immense love for music, which caught the attention of the world.

“He had a strong dedication and enthusiasm towards his passions and that voice.”

“It secured its place amidst the most hostile conversations.”

On Instagram, Dirk Blocker, who portrayed Michael Hitchcock, expressed that Michael was exceptionally intelligent, incredibly kind, supportive, and generous. He also had an exceptional talent and so much more to contribute.

The actor, born in Chicago, gained recognition for his performance in the film Glory in 1989. He acted alongside Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington, who received an Academy Award for their roles in this movie that depicted an African American military regiment during the Civil War in the United States.

In 2019, he informed The Associated Press about his challenges in finding employment within the movie industry, specifically in Hollywood. He expressed that the opportunities for African American actors were extremely limited during that time.

However, he would gain recognition by portraying Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street, a dark crime series on NBC. This show ran for seven seasons and was adapted from a book by David Simon, who later created The Wire.

Simon wrote on X that he was stunned.

“Andre Braugher. God,” he wrote.

“I have had the opportunity to collaborate with numerous exceptional actors, but I can confidently say that I will never come across someone superior to this particular individual.”

After some time, he decided to transition and take on a completely distinct role as a police officer on a unique television program. He switched to the genre of comedy, portraying Captain Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which starred Andy Samberg.

Braugher was awarded two Emmys throughout his career for the show, out of a total of 11 times he was nominated.

Even though Braugher had some experience with comedy in the show Men of a Certain Age, starring in Brooklyn Nine-Nine was still a significant change for him. He was predominantly recognized for his performances in serious and intense dramas.

Braugher expressed to the AP that he saw it as a chance to venture into something significantly dissimilar from the rest of his professional journey.

I enjoy it because it has the ability to expand my mind and challenge me to think differently. As a result, I believe that I have become a more flexible and open-minded actor, with a greater awareness of the countless options to approach a scene.

He and his co-star from the show Homicide, Ami Brabson, were married for over three decades.

They had three sons.
