Cleopatra: The Last Queen of Egypt

Cleopatra was one of the most famous and influential rulers of ancient Egypt. She was the last member of the Ptolemaic dynasty, a Macedonian Greek family that had ruled Egypt since the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC. She was also a lover of two powerful Roman leaders, Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, and a rival of Octavian, who later became Augustus, the first emperor of Rome.

Cleopatra became queen of Egypt at the age of 18, after the death of her father, Ptolemy XII, in 51 BC. She had to share the throne with her younger brother, Ptolemy XIII, who was also her husband, according to the custom of the Ptolemies. However, she soon faced a rebellion from her brother and his advisers, who tried to oust her from power. She fled to Syria and gathered an army to reclaim her throne.

In 48 BC, she saw an opportunity to ally herself with Julius Caesar, who had arrived in Alexandria after defeating his rival Pompey in a civil war. Caesar was impressed by Cleopatra’s intelligence and charm, and they became lovers. He helped her defeat her brother in the Battle of the Nile, and restored her as co-ruler with another younger brother, Ptolemy XIV. Cleopatra gave birth to Caesar’s son, Ptolemy XV Caesarion, in 47 BC.

Cleopatra followed Caesar to Rome in 46 BC, where she lived in his villa until his assassination in 44 BC. She then returned to Egypt and had her brother-husband killed, making her son her co-ruler. She also tried to legitimize Caesarion as Caesar’s heir, which angered Octavian, Caesar’s adopted son and successor.

In 41 BC, Cleopatra met Mark Antony, one of Caesar’s generals and a member of the triumvirate that ruled Rome after Caesar’s death. Antony was fascinated by Cleopatra’s beauty and wealth, and they soon became lovers as well. He gave her parts of the eastern Roman provinces as gifts, and recognized her son as king of kings. He also married her in an Egyptian ceremony, although he was already married to Octavian’s sister Octavia.

Octavian used Antony’s relationship with Cleopatra as a pretext to declare war on him. He accused Antony of betraying Rome and being under Cleopatra’s spell. He also spread propaganda that Cleopatra wanted to make Caesarion the ruler of Rome and Egypt. In 31 BC, Octavian’s navy defeated Antony and Cleopatra’s fleet at the Battle of Actium, off the coast of Greece.

Antony and Cleopatra fled to Egypt, where they were pursued by Octavian’s army. They tried to negotiate with him, but he refused to spare their lives or let them rule Egypt as his vassals. He also captured Caesarion and had him executed. Antony and Cleopatra committed suicide in Alexandria in 30 BC, rather than fall into Octavian’s hands. Antony stabbed himself with his sword, while Cleopatra allegedly poisoned herself with an asp bite.

With their deaths, Egypt became a province of the Roman Empire, and the Ptolemaic dynasty came to an end. Cleopatra’s legacy lived on in art and literature for centuries. She was portrayed as a seductive and tragic figure by many writers and artists, such as Shakespeare, Dryden, Shaw, Mankiewicz and Taylor. She was also admired for her political acumen, cultural achievements and feminine power by many historians and feminists.
